Anita Conti, la Dama del Mar

Anita Conti, Dame of the Sea

These are some of the many photographs taken by Anita Conti (1899-1997), a French biologist, oceanographer, photographer and writer who worked from an early age for the marine fisheries office in France and devoted her life to portray, explore and discover the sea and the fishing activities, with special attention to the African coast and its French colonies, where she tried to assess fish resources and species. Her African activities might be an easy target for criticism but the fact is she lived over there for about ten years integrated in the life of its inhabitants and with special interest in the wise and experienced traditional fishing tecniques. One of her passions, besides the conditions and work of sailors and fishermen of all kinds, were her attempts to capture giants of the sea such as whales and sharks as part of her intrepid and adventurer nature. But at the same time, as a sort of pioneer ecologist, she was one of the first to publicly warn of the deterioration and over-exploitation of the sea.
