Death Valley 69

Death Valley 69 is an unclassifiable and difficult EP (extended play) published at the beginning of the career of iconic New York band Sonic Youth, strongly influenced by the No Wave movement and with the collaboration on the homonymous track of one of the hallmarks of that scene, Lydia Lunch. The main video was directed by the controversial photographer and video artist Richard Kern. The title track was a sort of sick resemblance of the Charles Manson sect killings in August of 1969, wich somehow meant a shocking end point of the good intentions party era of the '60s. It was also included in the album they published that same year, Bad Moon Rising, wich in its whole seemed to have a similar subject.

"This is the fith in a series of paintings wich have pathos for the subject.
They are about mid life crisis, aging, fear, uncertainty and not feeling part of what is going on around us. Dissociated.
They are about taking stock of what has been and contemplating what is ahead.
i use vibrant colours contrast with very dark colours to heighten these often discordant emotions and show this conflict between certainty and uncertainty, hope and regret, joy and stress, sanity and insanity - to express more psychological aspects of being human; the human condition."

Ranting for a living

Aunque probablemente jamás llegaron a conocerme. No conocieron mi auténtico yo. Únicamente lo que yo les permití conocer. Sólo un poco.” ― Lydia Lunch, 'Paradoxia: Diario De Una Depredadora'.
'Road Rant' (Merrill Aldighieri, MVD Visuals 2012) is a filming of some French 2007 gigs by writer, performer, musician (and other misdeeds) Lydia Lunch with musicians Joe Budenholzer and Terry Edwards (Madness, Gallon Drunk, PJ Harvey ...) and, more interestingly, a very brief look at the paralell French radio promotion of her book 'Paradoxia' (first published in 1996), a promotion that she uses to unleash her habit of defying and ranting agaisnt conventions, provocations that have earned her being equally beleaguered and appreciated (even imitated) despite remaining generally quite unknown. Merrill and Lydia already worked together on the incendiary short film 'The Gun Is Loaded' (1989).
“No easy way out. No escape. From yourself. You had to LEARN to DEAL with the cards you were dealt. Had to learn the hard way that the world doesn't OWE you a fucking thing. Not a reason, nor excuse. No apologies. Had to learn that some forms of insanity run in the family, pure genetics, polluted lifelines, full of disease. Profanity. Addiction. Co-addiction. Inability to deal with reality, what the fuck ever that's suppose to mean when you're born into an emotional ghetto of endless abuse. Where the only way out is in...deep, deep inside, so you poke holes in your skin, thinking that if you could just concentrate the pain it wouldn't remain an all-consuming surround which suffocates you from the first breath of day to your last dying day. Day in. Day out. Day in. Day out. I knew all about it.” ― Lydia Lunch, 'Paradoxia: A Predator's Diary'.

'Kill Your Idols' (Scott Crary, 2004) is a documentary-report on a New York experimental, provocative, nihilist, rebel and radical movement defined as "No Wave" (as opposed to the pseudo-pop new wave emerging right after punk). Diffused at the time thanks to a compilation by Brian Eno, that trend included bands like DNA with Arto Lindsay or saxophonist-singer-showman James Chance, both musicians who played at some point or another in Lydia Lunch's band, Teenage Jesus and The Jerks, perhaps the most significative band of a movement which could also extend to some contemporary filmmakers, Nick Zedd probably the most representative (as can be seen in documentaries 'Llik Your Idols' and 'Blank City'). Although only those three groups were chosen for the compilation there were also some others that could be considered as No Wave bands, such as Theorical Girls or Swans, or almost immediate consequence, Sonic Yourh as the most popular of them all. The thing is that, despite having been ignored for a long time by the public radar because of their noisy and un-melodic music, those bands left a mark in later generations of musicians, eminently New Yorkers.

LETEO*
Lydia Lunch

Ven a mis brazos, cosa cruel y sombría
bestia indolente, ven a mis brazos otra vez

LETHE
Lydia Lunch

Come to my arms, cruel and sullen thing
Indolent beast, come to my arms again
For I would plunge my fingers in your mane
And be a long time unremembering
Bury myself in you,
Breathe your wild perfume, remorselessly
For one more hour
Breathe again, as of a ruined flower
Fragrance of love you have defiled
I long to sleep,
I think that from a slumber like death,
I would awake as I once was
And lavish without shame
Caress upon your body, glowing and dark

to drown my sorrow there is no abyss,
however deep, that compares with your bed

Lydia Lunch, Matrikamantra (1997)

'Blank City' (, 2010) is a documentary that portrays the artistic scene wich arosed at the end of the seventies and begginning of eighties as a result of the punk scene in the then desolate bohemian and criminal cheap neighborhoods of downtown New York. Known as no wave (a label against labels referring to the fashionable new wave that succeeded punk) , that atmosphere saw the emergence of numerous bands, photographers or filmmakers who gave a new twist to amateurism and chaos, experimenting in all kinds of media with the lack of technical skills and money as a motto and testing limits of confrontation with the self-indulgent society in times that settled a new conservative tendency in politics and public opinion. AIDS exterminated many of that generation, but some of the most interesting American counterculture artists arose from that scene.
