Las fotografías de Jamel Shabazz de los inicios del hip-hop sobre las calles de Nueva York durante los '70s y los '80s son una crónica ya icónica del nacimiento de un movimiento que parecía efímero pero que se extendió con rapidez y ha perdurado en el tiempo con fuerza, nacido como forma de expresión popular y revolucionaria aunque convertido luego en todo un rentable negocio (fácil y masivo) por plataformas, compañías y corporaciones. Sólo hay que echar un vistazo para ver cómo algunas películas o estrellas del pop han usado el rap como forma de ganar un poco de credibilidad o autenticidad o lo que sea, aunque buen material siga saliendo en todas partes del mundo. Pero ciertamente en los retratos de Shabazz se puede ver lo genuino de aquella explosión a nivel de calle. Su clásico libro 'Back in the Days' ['En Aquellos Días'] ha sido re-editado con el título de 'Back in the Days Remix' y se ha estrenado recientemente un documental sobre él títulado simplemente 'Street Photographer' ['Fotógrafo Callejero'].

You only have to take a look at some movies or many pop stars' records and check out how rap is used as a way of gaining some credibility or authenticity or whatever, although some interesting stuff keeps coming out everywhere. But certainly in Shabazz's portraits one can see the genuine basic initial explosion in the urban environment. His classic book 'Back in the Days' has been published again with the title 'Back in the Days Remix' and a documentary about him called simply 'Street Photographer' has been premiered recently.
