The new album by Patti Smith, entitled 'Banga', contains (as was not the case with a previous one) only original compositions except for a very personal and enjoyable version of Neil Young's 'After the Gold Rush'. A special edition of this comes out including a booklet with texts and images, wich anyway is a good complement to the music. The album sounded scrawny and linear on first listen (somehow it kind of seems a commercial attempt), but wins on second listening... And that personal voice of hers still resonates, inexplicably attractive, one that stays in mind after listening to any of her songs...
I also had the chance to read recently an updated version of her poetic reflections on the last days of her friend and early lover Robert Mapplethorpe, titled 'The Coral Sea' which, although it is orginally from 1996 (she even read it in public and recorded it back in 2005 with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine playing alongside), complements her extraordinary book of memoirs entitled 'Just Kids'.
