The JT Leroy affair: a story within a story
Jeremiah Terminator Leroy existió por un tiempo como personaje real. El asunto comenzó con una llamada de su creadora, Laura Albert, a un teléfono de terapia adolescente. El terapeuta se tragó sus invenciones y le recomendó plasmar en escritos sus dilemas. Una cosa llevó a otra y ella y su pareja se convertirían en representantes del autor, que a ojos del mundo terminaría encarnando su cuñada Savannah (ya surgieron algunos rumores en un primer momento a raíz del casual parecido con la actriz Martha Plimpton). Avalados por el aclamado autor Dennis Cooper y su agente, su historia encontró cauce y pronto verían la luz las publicaciones de ese precoz literato transgénero mimado y adorado por gran número de celebridades: Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, Wynona Ryder, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Bono, Gus Van Sant, etcétera. Incluso Asia Argento llevó al cine de forma fascinante su segunda novela. Hasta que New York Magazine destapó las sospechas de todo ese lío poliédrico. Y de ahí a la demanda por fraude solo pasó un tiempo. El caso es que, salvo por matices importantes como el Sida que se declaró sufría el autor/autora y los detalles más impactantes, el trasfondo seguía siendo de alguna manera material novelable. Laura, trabajadora de línea erótica, tenía un pasado singular y fantasioso, aunque mucho menos mediático. Al fin y al cabo, como declaró Paul Auster preguntado sobre el asunto: "A mí toda la historia me parece fascinante, muy literaria."

The therapist swallowed her inventions and advised him/her to put that troubled upbringing into writing. One thing led to another and she and her partner became managers of the author, who in the eyes of the world was performed by her sister-in-law Savannah (some comments already happened at first time due to her accidental resemblance to actress Martha Plimpton). Acclaimed novelist Dennis Cooper involved his agent into the promising wrintings and the thing was on. She/he became adored by many famous figures: Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, Wynona Ryder, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Bono, Gus Van Sant, etc. Even Asia Argento made a fascinating movie of the second novel, 'The Heart Is A Deceitful Thing'. Until New York Magazine opened suspections with an article. And some time later a haux lawsuit went on. The fact is that, except for important matters such as AIDS that was declared to be suffered by the author and the most shocking matters, the background remained somehow interesting. Laura, an erotic phone line worker, had a singular dreamy background, although less mediatic. And after all, as Paul Auster said on the subject: "To me the whole story seems fascinating."
