La pequeña isla griega de Hidra, por su emplazamiento bello y remoto, accesible por mar, fue visitada a mitad de las décadas del siglo pasado por aristócratas, artistas y libertarios, como si de una Ibiza del Egeo se tratara. Con el tiempo ha devenido en un destino idílico del turismo y residencias de lujo, pero entre esos primeros viajeros que buscaban libertad rústica y fuga estaba el poeta Leonard Cohen, decidido entonces a escribir una novela mientras se entregaba a las anfetaminas y el ácido. Allí conoció casualmente a la noruega Marianne Ilhen cuando el matrimonio de esta se desmoronaba. Se enamoraron y vivieron un romance dilatado en el tiempo aunque Cohen pronto se convertiría en un aclamado y seductor cantautor alejado del fracaso de su etapa de escritor. La relación entraría en declive con el paso de los años pero le escribió algunas canciones celebradas mundialmente y su recuerdo perduró, avivado en tiempos recientes por una carta de despedida de Leonard cuando Marianne estaba a punto de perder la vida. Nick Broomfield, que fuera uno de los amantes de la musa en la isla, dedicó un documental a esa famosa relación, que ya fuera recogida en un libro.
The small Greek island of Hydra, due to its beautiful and remote location, accessible by sea, was visited by aristocrats, artists and libertarians in the middle of the decades of last century, as if it were an Aegean Ibiza. Over time, it has become an idyllic tourist destination and a residence for some wealthy people, but among those early travelers seeking rustic freedom and demise was the poet Leonard Cohen, who was then determined to write a novel while devoted to amphetamines and acid. There he casually met the Norwegian Marianne Ilhen when her marriage was falling apart. They fell in love and lived a romance but Cohen was about to become an acclaimed singer-songwriter away from the failure of his period as a novelist. The relationship still lasted some years before declining but he wrote some songs for her that were celebrated worldwide and her memory lasted, fueled in recent times by a farewell letter from Leonard when Marianne was about to lose her life. Nick Broomfield, who was one of the muse lovers on the island, dedicated a documentary to that famous relationship that was already captured in a book.
