'Sun Records' is a recent mini-series for country music TV channel CMT which in eight episodes stages what is considered in a consensual way as the birth of rock'n'roll in the Sam Phillips Memphis recording Studio. Of course the process is much more complex than considering the recording of Ike Turner's band, 'Rocket 88' (1951), as the very first trigger of that music style. But if we stick to the official story, the show, based on a musical, is a fairly reliable review of the characters and environments of that rythm and sound revolution, a before-and-after point (at least for some time) in the history of society and popular culture of the 20th century.

Cash Box

One needs almost half a lifetime to listen to the 63 CDs in this box with the whole production by Johnny Cash for Columbia but, despite including many curiosities and rarities (and disappointments of course) that deviate from what is expected from him, you can hardly find out there a better compendium of what is at the end a remarkable magnificent and prolific musical career.

A poem by Johnny Cash dedicated to Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash backstage, New Brunswick, NJ, 1965. Foto: Donald Kramer

Y muchas otras cosas
Y muchas otras cosas.
- Johnny Cash

In the late 60's Bob Dylan was tired of his status as a star and "voice of a generation", harassed by the press and each new release received as a new statement of the sign of the times. So in another twist of his career he became interested in American roots music (basically acoustic country though mixed with subtle pop and rock) and modulated his voice to a softer tone that he just blamed on breaking with a strong habit of smoking cigarettes. It was the time of his albums 'John Wesley Harding' and 'Nashville Skyline'. Both of them also made it to the top of the hit lists despite the change of style. During his stay in Nashville in 1969, recording the second one, coincided in the recording studio with Johnny Cash by then a friend since they had met at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964. Together they worked on some songs, of which only 'Girl From North Country' was included in the record (the song appeared originally in his 1963's 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' and was dedicated to his love then, Suze Rotolo, who was featured in that famous record cover and has died recently). Moreover Cash wrote a poem inspired by Dylan published as liner notes in that record, a very common practice in the era of vinyl lps. In this recent times of mp3s and downloadable music the generations of youngsters growing with internet, many of whom have never bought a record in his life and do not value music as a physical or touchable object, probably will not have interest in understanding why music fans enjoyed at that time the design and content of the package. This kind of details, a poem written by Johnny Cash devoted by friendship and admiration to Bob Dylan, seems a good way to suggest how important it was the album as a full art object. By the way, not that it matters, but it seems the poem curiously earned Cash his first Grammy Award (in the category of 'Best liner notes for an album' -or whatever-).

"Of Bob Dylan"

There are those who do not imitate,
Who cannot imitate
But then there are those who emulate
At times, to expand further the light
Of an original glow.
Knowing that to imitate the living
Is mockery
And to imitate the dead
Is robbery
There are those
Who are beings complete unto themselves
Whole, undaunted,-a source
As leaves of grass, as stars
As mountains, alike, alike, alike,
Yet unalike
Each is complete and contained
And as each unalike star shines
Each ray of light is forever gone
To leave way for a new ray
And a new ray, as from a fountain
Complete unto itself, full, flowing
So are some souls like stars
And their words, works and songs
Like strong, quick flashes of light

From a brilliant, erupting cone.
So where are your mountains
To match some men?

This man can rhyme the tick of time
The edge of pain, the what of sane
And comprehend the good in men, the bad in men
Can feel the hate of fight, the love of right
And the creep of blight at the speed of light
The pain of dawn, the gone of gone
The end of friend, the end of end
By math of trend
What grip to hold what he is told
How long to hold, how strong to hold
How much to hold of what is told.
And Know
The yield of rend; the break of bend
The scar of mend
I'm proud to say that I know it,
Here-in is a hell of a poet.
And lots of other things
And lots of other things.
- Johnny Cash

Folsom Prison

Listening again to this masterpiece, Johnny Cash recorded live in 1968 in Folsom Prison (California). Might not be the best live recording of all times but to me one of the most impressive and valued, despite having read lately that the prisoners had so much respect for him that remained quite silent during the show so applauses and noise had to be fixed afterwards in the Studio (a trick that has been used some other times). But that voice, those songs and that charisma every time he speaks... Anyway, a monument of American popular music that goes well for almost any time or moment of the day and I would suggest enjoying it at high volume.
