A finales de la década de los 60 Bob Dylan estaba harto de su estatus de estrella de la música y "voz de una generación", acosado por la prensa y cada lanzamiento nuevo recibido como una nueva declaración del signo de los tiempos. Así que en otro giro más de su carrera se interesó por la música de raíces norteamericana (básicamente country acústico aunque aderezado sutilmente con algo de pop y rock) y moduló su voz en un registro más suave que él simplemente relacionaba con haber rebajado su hábito de los cigarrillos. Fue la época de los discos 'John Wesley Harding' y 'Nashville Skyline' que, a pesar del cambio de estilo, fueron también sendos éxitos. Durante su estancia en Nashville en 1969, grabando el segundo de ellos, coincidió en el Estudio de grabación con Johnny Cash que para entonces era ya un amigo desde que habían coincidido en el Festival Folk de Newport de 1964. Juntos trabajaron en algunas canciones, de las que sólo 'Girl From North Country' se incluyó en el disco (la canción apareció originalmente en su disco de 1963 'The Freewhelin' Bob Dylan', dedicada a su novia de entonces Suze Rotolo que aparecía en aquella famosa portada y que ha fallecido recientemente). Además Cash escribió un poema inspirado en Dylan como texto a publicar en el disco, una práctica muy frecuente en la época del vinilo. En esta época de descargas y mp3 las generaciones que crecen y han crecido con internet, muchos de los cuales no ha comprado un disco en su vida o no relacionan la música con un objeto físico y palpable, probablemente no tendrán interés en entender plenamente por qué los aficionados a la música disfrutaban en su momento con el diseño y contenido del envoltorio. Este tipo de detalles, un poema de Johnny Cash dedicado por amistad y admiración a Bob Dylan, parece una buena forma de sugerir la importancia que tenía en su momento la presentación y el disco como objeto artístico. Por cierto, no es que eso importe, pero el poema al parecer le valdría curiosamente a Cash su primer Premio Grammy (en el apartado de 'Mejores notas de disco').

In the late 60's Bob Dylan was tired of his status as a star and "voice of a generation", harassed by the press and each new release received as a new statement of the sign of the times. So in another twist of his career he became interested in American roots music (basically acoustic country though mixed with subtle pop and rock) and modulated his voice to a softer tone that he just blamed on breaking with a strong habit of smoking cigarettes. It was the time of his albums 'John Wesley Harding' and 'Nashville Skyline'. Both of them also made it to the top of the hit lists despite the change of style. During his stay in Nashville in 1969, recording the second one, coincided in the recording studio with Johnny Cash by then a friend since they had met at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964. Together they worked on some songs, of which only 'Girl From North Country' was included in the record (the song appeared originally in his 1963's 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' and was dedicated to his love then, Suze Rotolo, who was featured in that famous record cover and has died recently). Moreover Cash wrote a poem inspired by Dylan published as liner notes in that record, a very common practice in the era of vinyl lps. In this recent times of mp3s and downloadable music the generations of youngsters growing with internet, many of whom have never bought a record in his life and do not value music as a physical or touchable object, probably will not have interest in understanding why music fans enjoyed at that time the design and content of the package. This kind of details, a poem written by Johnny Cash devoted by friendship and admiration to Bob Dylan, seems a good way to suggest how important it was the album as a full art object. By the way, not that it matters, but it seems the poem curiously earned Cash his first Grammy Award (in the category of 'Best liner notes for an album' -or whatever-).
