The Saints eran una banda australiana pionera del punk, influidos por el rock'n'roll, los Stooges o MC5. Pioneros de verdad, ya estaban haciendo lo suyo antes que los Sex Pistols (el conocido manager de éstos, Malcolm Mclaren, falleció ayer) o los Clash y al mismo tiempo que los Ramones. Pero cuando viajaron a Londres para preparar su lanzamiento internacional la compañía de discos (EMI) quería cambiar su aspecto y vestirlos de forma similar a los otros grupos punk, a lo que se negaron (tienen alguna canción en su discografía riéndose del tema de la moda). Su falta de imagen probablemente les negó el favor de crítica y público. Luego fueron gradualmente introduciendo cada vez más influencias de la música negra en su sonido. Se comenzaron a separar en 1979 pero con una u otra formación fueron aguantando el paso del tiempo. Ed Kuepper, que fue el primero en abandonar el barco, montó al dejarlos un grupo de jazz-punk llamado The Laughing Clowns para luego seguir una irregular carrera en solitario. De los Saints son muy recomendables sus tres primeros discos: 'I`m Stranded' (1977), 'Eternally Yours' (1978) y 'Prehistoric Sounds' (1978). A partir del tercero empezaron a hacer pop-rock-folk y eso ya me interesa menos (toda esa mierda de sonido que se hacía en los 80s). Pero todo lo anterior es 100% disfrutable, imprescindible para el que le guste el Punk Rock.

Afterwards they started increasingly introducing jazz and blues to their music. By 1979 three founding members were leaving the band, the first of them Ed Kuepper, who started an avant-garde jazz-punk band, The Laughing Clowns, and later a solo career. Anyway the Saints stuff is really great, I mean the first three albums: 'I `m Stranded' (1977), 'Eternally Yours' (1978) and 'Prehistoric Sounds' (1978). After that they started practising some kind of pop-rock-folk, and I don't care much about that (you know, the fucking 80s). But their first three albums stay as classic shit. 100% enjoyable. And essential for those who like Punk Rock!.
