Brilliant American remake (although copied almost shot by shot from the original version) of a great French film. Pepe Le Moko is a French criminal who leaves Paris after a big theft of jewelry and takes refuge in the Algerian casbah. From then on he suffers of Paris nostalgia for he feels a prisoner of the labyrinth of alleys, the most safe place for him to hide. A French policeman is visiting and he is seriously determined to catch him while Pepe meets some Parisian tourists including a woman he falls in love with. But the jealousy of a local girl, mixed with signs of betrayal from some partner and a strange friendship with an Algerian police inspector threatens to ruin his chances of happiness. Visually great, lightning seems the work of a genius, as well as great recreation indoors of the Algerian casbah. The love scene between Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr is a classic one.
