En marzo y abril de 2002 Nancy y Danny Lyon hicieron dos viajes a Cuba salvando los impedimentos que dificultan a los estadounidenses esa visita. Dentro de Cuba la pareja viajó libremente y Lyon fotografió lo que él quiso, sin la interferencia de los soldados o la policía. El primer viaje fue a través de Cancún, donde los Lyon tomaron el vuelo de las 8:30 PM de México a La Habana. El segundo viaje fue a través de Toronto, donde hay un vuelo semanal a Santiago de Cuba. A su regreso, al entrar en el área de Aduanas de Estados Unidos en Toronto, para su vuelo de regreso desde Toronto a Albany, Nueva York, fueron ampliamente interrogados por una serie de agentes de aduanas de Estados Unidos. Cuando admitieron que habían ido a Cuba a hacer fotografías, sus pasaportes fueron confiscados, y se les informó que serían acusados de violar la Ley de Comercio con el Enemigo. Es ilegal que los ciudadanos estadounidenses gasten dinero en Cuba, que ha sido objeto de un embargo durante cuarenta años. In March and April of 2002 Nancy and Danny Lyon made two trips to Cuba. Inside Cuba, a country under a long historic Communist dictatorship regime, the couple traveled freely, and Lyon photographed whatever he wanted without interference from soldiers or police. The first trip was through Cancun, where the Lyons caught the 8:30 PM Aero Mexico flight to Havana. The second trip was via Toronto where there is a weekly flight to Santiago de Cuba. On their return, upon entering the United States Customs area in Toronto, for their flight back from Toronto to Albany, New York, they were extensively questioned by a number of United States Customs Agents. When they admitted that they had gone to Cuba to make photographs, their passports were confiscated, then returned, and they were told they would be charged with violating the Trading with the Enemy act. It is illegal for American citizens to spend money in Cuba. It is believed that last year over one hundred thousands Americans traveled to Cuba illegally.
