El pasado día 1 de este mes Santiago Auserón publicó un nuevo disco titulado 'Río Negro', el quinto bajo el alias de Juan Perro, y en esta ocasión la música va de ritmos de Blues y Jazz (en su anterior 'Cantares de Vela' y también en otras aventuras posteriores ya iba por derroteros parecidos) en lugar de la música caribeña que predominaba en su primera etapa, aunque da igual el palo que toque porque las composiciones están como siempre en ese alto nivel suyo, entendiendo que lo que a fin de cuentas parece motivar al ex-componente de Radio Futura no es la complejidad ni el virtuosismo sino la canción popular aunque siempre con esas particulares ráfagas y viñetas literarias que no son de extrañar en uno de los verdaderos intelectuales del panorama musical español. 'Río Negro', la canción que da título al disco, se ha venido ofreciendo para descarga directa y gratuita en la página de su propia discográfica ('La Huella Sonora'). Entre ese cancionero nuevo se incluye un homenaje a su amigo Joe Strummer, con el título de 'José Rasca', que se sirve gratis como tema extra en la edición para descarga digital del disco. En la página de 'La Huella Sonora' hay una sección, 'Cuaderno', donde escribe reflexiones y artículos sobre diversos asuntos y allí se puede leer un texto con recuerdos sobre el fallecido miembro de los Clash y sus pasos por Madrid. Además en esa página hay una fantástica radio online que contiene una muy buena selección de música de Nueva Orleans y esas fascinantes sesiones del músico Snooks Eaglin, del que yo nunca había oído hablar hasta entonces.

Although the style doesn't matter because compositions are as always in that high level of him, understanding that what seems to motivate this ex-component of the historical Spanish Rock band Radio Futura is not complexity, virtuosity or originality but to write in the tradition of basic popular songs but always with some particular intellectual bursts not surprising in one of the true masterminds of the Spanish musical scene. He has served the song that gives name to the record, 'Río Negro', as a free download in the website of his own record label ('La Huella Sonora') and that one is my favorite among the new stuff, it sounds 100% like his best repertoire and is by itself a perfect piece. Along with 'Reina Zulú' ('Zulu Queen'). And among that new stuff there is a tribute to his friend Joe Strummer, with the title 'José Rasca' ('Joe Strum'), available for free as an extra track of the digital download of the record at his website. In his site 'La Huella Sonora' there is a very interesting section, 'Cuaderno' ('Notebook'), featuring among other texts (only available in Spanish, no translation) memories about the deceased member of The Clash and his occasional stays at Madrid. To be found as well in that site a fantastic online radio wich includes a selection of music from New Orleans and also some fascinating recordings by 'Snooks' Eaglin, a musician I had never heard of before.
Anyway, a pleasure to have Juan Perro back on the road and I'll try to attend one of the shows if I can. Demos of some of the new songs can be heard in his MySpace and at the time are served to be downloaded for free at his website.
