A diferencia de los artistas más afamados del blues no grabó para ninguna de las míticas discográficas del género sino con la menos conocida Vee-Jay Records, pero su estilo particular fue definitivamente influyente en el surgimiento del rock. Los Rolling Stones han grabado varios de sus temas y lo consideran una de las principales referencias en su sonido. También han versioneado sus temas, entre otros, Elvis Presley, los Yardbirds, Neil Young o Etta James.
