Photographs from the 'La Vida Loca' series by Christian Poveda. I mentioned a few months ago on the blog this documentary and reportage about the Mara 18, one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in Latin America, forged in the civil war of El Salvador and the U.S. Latino immigration and one that has become thorugh the years a tradition, a way of life and a whole culture in the neighborhoods of El Salvador. The work costed its author his life for the French-Spanish journalist was murdered in September 2009 on the outskirts of San Salvador after finishing the report, a crime for which some members of the band he photographed and filmed and a policeman were arrested and blamed. It is speculated that the crime was the result of the wrath of the band, perhaps considering that Poveda failed in some of the commitments made with the band and angry with the idea of him making money at their expense or maybe for him being interested in the end of violence intending to make peace between the mara 18 and their rivals or (the most absurd of them all) as a response to the rumours of him serving as informer to the police. But it should be add that there is a manifest and a petition circulating in the net and signed it seems by friends of the deceased photojournalist blaming Salvadoran authorities as inducers of the crime, a consequence of having exposed the incompetence and corruption of the system.
