With a debut album based on a demo recorded on an 8-track in a basement with a pair of musicians who often accompany her (a drummer and a multi-instrumentalist) and the final result produced by Rob Ellis (regular collaborator with PJ Harvey, to whose approach to music her songs don't sound very distant), British artist Anna Calvi openly declares to be influenced by singers like Edith Piaf or Scott Walker and especially acknowledges having intensely studied Nina Simone's recordings. The album was released in January of the present year and in it stands out the orchestral and strangely sensual sound of her voice and guitar playing. Brian Eno backs up in a song and was an instant supporter and Nick Cave personally selected her to open for his band Grinderman during several tour dates.
