Born to a ibrarian and an English teacher, his interest on literature was fostered from an early age. So too was his awareness of religion with the Bible forming an integral influence on his songwriting and authorship. He was educated at Caufield Grammar School, Melbourne, and attended art school at Caufield Institute of Technology. The photographer of this image, Ashley Mackevicius, had become friends with Cave during school. He took this photograph in the loft bedroom he occupied in his own parents' house, with Cave's desk lamp illuminating the shot and one of his drawings in the wall. 1973 was the year he formed a band with his school friend Mick Harvey and Phil Calvert and played a number of parties and functions with a cover repertoire of 60s pop and 70s glam rock including Alice Cooper, Lou Reed and David Bowie."
