Jerome Liebling fue un reconocido maestro de la fotografía que formó parte de la conocida asociación Photo League de Nueva York, cooperativa de artistas que se caracterizaba fundamentalmente por un enfoque hacia fines sociales. No en vano se le conoce como un artista eminentemente humanitario, que trataba de ensalzar en sus retratos, reportajes y filmaciones valores relacionados con los derechos civiles y que solía tener como sujetos de sus trabajos a los héroes cotidianos, entendiendo como tal a los integrantes de las clases desfavorecidas y los pobladores anónimos de la calle. También desarrolló una importante labor pedagógica, sobre todo en el Departamento de Fotografía y Filmación que fundó en el Hampshire College en el Estado de Massachusetts donde enseñó durante 20 años. Desafortunadamente Liebling falleció el 27 de Julio de este 2011 a los 87 años de edad.
