Gustave Doré's illustrations for Coleridge's The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner
Estas ilustraciones fueron realizadas por el exitoso artista autodidacta de origen alsaciano Gustave Doré (1832-1883) y su reputado taller parisino para la edición de 1875 del poema del romanticista Samuel Taylor Coleridge 'The Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner' ['La Balada Del Viejo Marinero'], una historia en rima con tintes bíblicos sobre un marinero castigado por infortunios de cierto carácter mágico, originalmente editada por primera vez en 1798. Los magníficos grabados, firmados por Doré y los artesanos que participaron en ellos, enriquecen de una forma brillante y casi indispensable la narración dándole un toque de epopeya aún más fantasioso y genial que aquel poema escrito bajo la influencia del uso común de los opiáceos en los que Coleridge solía encontrar la inspiración. Las ilustraciones de Doré decoraron gran cantidad de ediciones especiales, clásicos de Byron, Dante, Poe o el Quijote y la Biblia por nombrar algunos.
This artwork was made by the successful self-taught artist of Alsatian origin Gustave Doré (1832-1883) and his renowned Paris atelier for the 1875 edition of a poem by romanticist Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 'The Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner', a story in wich a sailor suffers several misfortunes of biblical references in his ship, originally published for the first time in 1798. The magnificent illustrations, signed by Doré and the artisans who participated in them, enriched in a brilliant and almost indispensable way that epic narrative with a touch of fantasy even more brilliant than that of the poem written under the influence of the common use of opioids in wich Coleridge used to find inspiration. Doré's illustrations decorated many classic epics of the time as those by Byron, Dante, Poe or Don Quixote and the Bible to name a few.
