Director de cine y guionista, músico y musicólogo, actor o programador cultural entre otras son las ocupaciones de Michel Dahmani, más conocido como Tony Gatlif, nacido de madre gitana y padre bereber en la Argelia francesa (Argel, 1948), país que abandonó en los 60s con motivo de la Guerra de la Independencia para establecerse en París donde pasaría unos años de vagabundeo, delincuencia menor y reformatorios antes de que un encuentro con el actor Michel Simon le propiciase algunos trabajos como actor teatral para luego pasar a dirigir cine, un cine que se caracteriza principalmente pero no exclusivamente por la defensa de la cultura nómada romaní y sus músicas con sus diferentes emplazamientos y sus obvias conexiones (árabes, hindúes, balcánicas, ibéricas...). Tan disfrutable como su cine para quien sepa apreciar su propuesta son sus bandas sonoras donde se muestra la riqueza multicultural del viaje interior y físico que plantea en sus guiones y que normalmente tiene mucho que ver, de una manera u otra, con su propia experiencia como apátrida y con la semblanza de las vicisitudes de sus semejantes y los oprimidos en general.
Film director and screenwriter, musician and musicologist, actor or cultural programmer among other things are the occupations of Michel Dahmani, better known as Tony Gatlif, born of a kabyle father and roma mother in French Algeria (Algiers, 1948), a country he abandoned in the 60s because of the Independance War to settle in Paris where he spent a few years of wandering and minor crime before a meeting with actor Michel Simon who introduced him to his agent and got him some work as a stage actor before subsequently going on to direct films of his very own characterized primarily but not exclusively by the defense of Roma nomadic culture and its music with its different locations and all sorts of connections (Arabian, Indian, Balkan, Iberian ...). As enjoyable as his movies for those who can appreciate his proposal are the soundtracks reflecting the multicultural richness of the physical and inner journey in his scripts that usually have a lot to do, in one way or another, with his own experience as exiled and having suffered himself of racial prejudice.
