'Autoluminescent' is a documentary on one of the most undervalued-ignored underground musical scene figures, Australian Rowland S. Howard (1959-2009), an excellent and very personal guitarist, composer or singer for devastating mythical bands like The Birthday Party (with Nick Cave and company), Crime & The City Solution and These Inmmortal Souls but also with a small but interesting solo career (only 2 albums) or in collaboration with Lydia Lunch or Nikki Sudden among others. The film seems to serve, for youngsters ignoring his work or for fans, as a vehicle to promote his second solo album, the almost posthumous ' Pop Crimes', but at the end works severely as a worthy tribute to his career and person. During the footage the spectator listens to some music but mainly to the opinions and tales from almost all who have something to contribute, colleagues, friends, ex-lovers or family besides some words from Roland himself. Missing here, though, the appearance of Anita Lane, who was a principal female figure in the development of this story back when she met then teenagers Nick Cave and Rowland Howard and could be said, with apologies to Lydia Lunch and to be better understood, she meant nearly something as Anita Pallenberg for the Stones. Anyway a decent portrait here about one of the most interesting guys in rock who really deserved to be claimed.
