Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles’ debut smash, “I Sold My Heart to the
Junkman” sparked a firestorm of controversy when it was discovered that
the track belonged to Chicago quartet The Starlets. In 1961 the
Starlets had recorded the track with used-car salesman-turned-producer
Harold Robinson, but upon the record’s release, Robinson replaced The
Starlets’ name with Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles, a
Philadelphia-based girl group he had recently signed to his own Newton
label. When Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles were caught lip-syncing
The Starlets’ version on American Bandstand, The Starlets sued,
and the other group was forced to record their own version of the
track. But it was too late. To this day, The Starlets’ “I Sold My Heart
to the Junkman” remains credited to Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles. —
