Susan Bottomly a.k.a. International Velvet

Billy Name, who worked doing lights for theatre and spectacles, is mainly known, like Gerard Malanga and others, as a member of Warhol's Silver Factory staff, where he helped execute and concieve ideas, originally under the name Billy Linich, such as the Velvet Underground record covers. During his time in the Factory he took a lot of pictures, wich later on served him to treasure a big interesting archive of the time. He died last July.

Billy Name, 'The Velvet Underground Under Review'.
"The cover [for White Light/White Heat], wich is a black on black of it skull tattoo, there is a skull on a shiny black background, that came about because when they [The Velvet Underground] were going to do the second album Lou [Reed] came to me and said Billy I want you to do the cover for the next album, so I said Lou rather than me trying to come with a design image why not I let yo go through all my negative file [and] you select something and we'll use that for the cover image [?]. So what he selected was an image from one of our Warhol's movie called Bike Boy [1967] with this stud hustler that I don't know if we picked him up on Times Square or where we got him, his name was Joe Spencer he was a neat guy, but anyway he had that tattoo on his upper bicep forearm and Lou spotted it in one of the frames from one of the stills I had made of his arm, he was standing on a doorway with his co-star and Lou said I want that for the album cover and I said you mean this picture [?] and he said no the tattoo on the guy's arm wich in the 35 mm black and white frame is like this tiny little thing you know, so I really had to like enlarge it enourmously so it got totally grained but it was cool you know, it was funky looking like that so we used that and I said let's do it like black on black you know. And it became that very famou album cover." Billy Name, 'The Velvet Underground Under Review'.
