El año pasado salieron a la luz unas 90 polaroids de las 300 que Robert Mapplethorpe tomó allá por los años 70s, cuando empezaba a fotografiar. Como estudiante de arte experimentó con el dibujo y otros medios pero es la fotografía lo que le haría famoso. La imediatez de la película Polaroid le permitió experimentar con el medio de forma muy práctica y ya en esas imágenes se ve un primer esbozo de los temas que le convertirían en un artista popular y polémico. Las imágenes permanecían inéditas en una caja de la Fundación Mapplethorpe hasta el año pasado cuando Sylvia Wolf, que visitaba la Fundación como nueva directora del Museo Whitney de Arte Americano de Nueva York, dió con ellas y les dedicó una exposición. Luego la colección ha seguido su curso por otros museos y se ha editado en libro.

The images were kept in a box in the Mapplethorpe Foundation until last year when Sylvia Wolf, then new director of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, found and used some for an exhibition at the museum. Later the collection has been shown in other spaces and has been published in a book.
