Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse·'Dark Night of the Soul'


El recientemente desaparecido (Marzo 2010, suicidio) Mark Linkous, responsable de la banda Sparklehorse, y el artista y productor (Gnarls Barkley, Beck, Gorillaz, The Good The Bad and The Queen, The Black Keys...) conocido como Danger Mouse (nombre real Brian Burton) se asociaron en 2006 para producir un disco de Sparklehorse y como resultado de la admiración mutua estuvieron intercambiando ideas con canciones sobrantes y temas nuevos hasta que las encajaron en este álbum conceptual que grabaron hace tiempo pero no ha visto realmente la luz hasta hace poco. Al parecer inspirado por 'La Noche Oscura' de San Juan de la Cruz (¿de verdad?), en él se tratan temas como la veganza, la guerra o el dolor y han colaborado otros artistas como Iggy Pop, Julian Casablancas (Strokes) o Black Francis (Pixies) pero sobre todo David Lynch a quién se le propuso realizar un vídeo pero que prefirió encargarse de todo el material visual aportando fotografías para ilustrar las canciones y además cantó en un par de temas. Una disputa con la discográfica EMI dificultó la salida del disco, así que el propio Danger Mouse se encargó de sacar al mercado el material visual en una caja diseñada por David Lynch y en la que se incluía un Cd-rom virgen para descargar el disco, que ya circulaba por la red, con la inscripción "Por motivos legales el cd-rom no contiene música. Úsenlo como quieran", coincidiendo con una exposición de las creaciones de Lynch. Curiosa y extravagante iniciativa la de vender un disco vacío bien empaquetado incitando a rastrear su descarga ilegal, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que provenía de uno de sus creadores. Danger Mouse ya puso en dificultades a la compañía de discos anteriormente con una grabación, 'The Grey Album', que fusionaba el disco blanco de los Beatles y el disco negro del rapero Jay-Z. Pero en cualquier caso en Julio de este año las canciones al fin se publicaron oficialmente en una edición de lujo conteniendo un libreto con las fotografías, postales, póster, los cds e incluso vinilos.

The recently passed away (March 2010, suicide) Mark Linkous, responsible for that Sparklehorse band, and the artist and producer (Gnarls Barkley, Beck, Gorillaz, The Good The Bad and The Queen, The Black Keys ...) known as Danger Mouse (real name Brian Burton) first worked together producing a Sparklehorse album in 2006. Both contacted initially as a result of mutual admiration and after that work were determined for a period to exchange ideas with some left songs and new ones until they decided to gather them for this concept album recorded time ago but wich has seen the light recently. Apparently inspired by 'The Dark Night' by St. Juan de la Cruz (really?), it addresses issues like revenge, war or pain with help from many other artists such as Iggy Pop, Julian Casablancas (Strokes) or Black Francis (Pixies) but especially David Lynch who was asked to make a video but instead provided all visuals including photographs to illustrate the songs and also did some singing in a couple of songs. A dispute with record label EMI resulted in the material unpublished for a long period, so Danger Mouse himself was to put it out last year, presenting the visual stuff in a box designed by David Lynch and including a blank CD-rom to download in it the album wich was already circulating in the network, with the inscription "For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.", coinciding with an exhibition of the visuals for it by Lynch. A curious move, to sell a blank cd well packaged inviting to trace the illegal downloading of it, especially considering that it came from one of its creators. Danger Mouse had already been into trouble with the record company beacuse of 'The Grey Album', which mushed-up the Beatles' white album and the black album by hip hop star Jay-Z. Anyway in July of the present year the songs were at last officially released in a deluxe edition including a booklet with the visuals, postcards, posters, the CDs and even a vinyl edition.
