Pete Ross & The Sapphire | Their album 'Rollin' On Down The Lane' explained song by song by Susy Sapphire
Pete Ross y Susy Sapphire son un dúo de origen australiano que facturan un rock algo melodramático para el que citan influencias como Nick Cave o Ennio Morriconne pero que suena repleto de referencias múltiples y matices muy personales. El álbum, titulado 'Rollin' On Down The Lane' (del cual se puede escuchar un extracto en bandcamp), se publicó a finales de Noviembre del año pasado y llevan ya un tiempo presentándolo por todas partes. En Mayo estarán de gira por la Península gracias a Soulblonding y será una buena oportunidad para escucharlos en faena porque es en directo donde parece que realmente despliegan su fuerza musical y donde el nuevo repertorio toma cuerpo y viaja a otros niveles. He tenido la oportunidad de comunicarme con Susy Sapphire, la mitad femenina de la banda, por mail y se ha marcado el detalle de comentar para este blog las canciones del álbum. Así que ahí queda eso:
Pleased To Meet You:
Esta es la primera canción de lo que podríamos llamar nuestra trilogía. Hemos escrito sobre 3 personajes ficticios y sus vidas cruzadas. Esta canción está escrita desde el punto de vista de Jenna.
Devil Inside:
Esta fue la elección obvia para hacer un vídeo musical en parte porque es más corta que el resto y también porque la letra es más escasa así que facilita el tipo de clip cinematográfico que teníamos en mente. A la directora, Viola Barbato, le encantó la canción e inmediatamente salió con la idea de una localización que ella tenía en mente. Quería que el vídeo diera la sensación de un cortometraje, sin instrumentos ni mímica de labios y, aunque nosotros no lo teníamos claro al principio, nos fuimos convenciendo a medida que la historia iba desarrollándose. Filmamos en dos localizaciones, un siquiátrico abandonado y un casino en ruinas sonre una colina con vistas al Lago Como. Las dos localizaciones eran espectaculares y extraordinarias y lo rodamos en un par de días. La idea de la trilogía nos vino cuando le pedimos a nuestro amigo Keith Rose que participara en el vídeo, así que ahí teníamos a 3 personajes, dos masculinos y uno femenino, siguiéndose entre sí.
Shadow (Man):
Tanto en esta canción, como en Devil Inside y Corinne, contamos con la participación de Sofy Perez, la cantante de los parisinos Tulla Larsen. Viajamos a París y grabamos su voz la madrugada de un Domingo en su apartamento.
Rake:
Esta es una versión de una canción de Townes Van Zandt, pero es muy diferente a la original, con un ritmo completamente distinto.
Corinne:
...es la parte luminosa.
Late Last Night:
Esta es la canción del malvado Bobby.
To The Wind:
Grabamos esta canción sobre la 1 de la madrugada, tras consumir una cantidad razonable de vino. Pete perdió los auriculares a mitad de canción pero siguió cantando y yo no podía escuchar mi bajo porque la guitarra estaba a un volumen brutal, pero seguimos tocando de todas formas y es la toma que está en el álbum.

Es una canción de Tom waits y si te fijas el título del álbum ('Rollin' On Down The Lane') es una frase de la letra. Se debe a que un día le dije a Pete que cuando tocamos en vivo siento que realmente cojemos el paso y nos relajamos y compenetramos justo en el mismo momento preciso del repertorio, que es cuando él pronuncia la frase "I can hear it coming rolling on down the lane" ["Puedo escuchar cómo viene rodando por la calle"]...
Corn Silk Hair:
Fue idea de Dimi Dero grabar esta canción, que escribimos originalmente para el álbum anterior de Pete, 'Midnight Show'. Dimi tuvo la ocurrencia de ralentizarla y hacer sonar cadenas contra el suelo. Le dijo a Gianluca (el pianista) que imaginara que le faltaban 8 dedos y tenía que tocar así.
The Great Mistake:
Grabamos una sola toma de ésta con la banda tocando a la vez, bajo, guitarra, batería. Luego Gianluca tocó dos versiones distintas al piano, una cerca del micro y otra a un par de metros. La idea de la canción (que vendría a ser la versión de los hechos según Billy, desde la ultratumba) es que se supone que sucede de madrugada, con el último hombre que queda en el Bar, ese tipo de canción.

The album, titled 'Rollin' On Down The Lane' (some songs from it available for a listen in bandcamp), was published late November last year and they have been on the road for a while now presenting it everywhere. In May the act will be touring Spain thanks to Soulblonding and it will be a good opportunity for anybody here interested to feel the repertoire because it is on stage where they seem to really display their musical force and the songs travel to another level. But they are touring all over so remember the moment is now. I've had the opportunity to communicate with Susy Sapphire, the female half of the band, by mail and she kindly took the time to comment the album's songs for this blog. So here it is:
Pleased To Meet You:
This is the first song of our so-called trilogy. We wrote about 3 fictional characters and their star-crossed interactions. This song is Jenna's side of the story.
Devil Inside:
This song became the obvious choice for the music video partly because it is shorter than the others, and also the lyrics are more sparse, so it lent itself better to the cinematic type clip we had in mind. The director Viola Barbato loved it and immediately put it together with a location idea she had. She really pushed for the video to be like a short film, with no instruments or singing, and while we weren't sure at first, of course we were convinced the more the story came together. We filmed in two locations; one was an abandoned psychiatric hospital and the other a derelict casino on a hill overlooking Lake Como. They were both quite spectacular and extraordinary locations, and we filmed over two days. The trilogy idea came in when we asked our friend Keith Rose to join us for filming, so we had 3 characters, two male and one female, following each other around.
Shadow (Man):
This song along with Devil Inside and Corinne has additional backing vocals by Sofy Perez, the singer of Tulla Larsen in Paris. We went to Paris shortly after the recording and recorded her voice late on a Sunday

This is a Townes Van Zandt cover, but is quite different to the original, with a completely different rhythm.

This is bad Bobby's song

We recorded this song at about 1am, after consuming a reasonable amount of the local vino. Pete lost his headphones half way through the song but kept singing and I couldn't hear a thing of my bass because the guitar was so loud but we all just kept going anyway, and it became the take that we used.

It's a song by Tom Waits, and you might notice that the album title is taken from a line in this song. That's because I said to Pete one day that when we play our live show, I feel we really hit our stride and relax and get the groove just right always at the same point in the set list, which is exactly the line where he sings 'I can hear it coming rolling on down the lane'...

It was Dimi Dero's idea to record this song, which we originally wrote for Pete's previous album, Midnight Show. He had an idea to slow it right down and use chains on the floor tom. He told Gianluca (the piano player) that he had to imagine that he had cut off 8 of his fingers and play it like that.
The Great Mistake:
We recorded only one take of this song, and actually with the full band playing, bass, drums, guitar. Then Gianluca took that as a guide and played two versions on the piano, one close miked, and one from about 2 metres away. The idea with the song, (which is Billy's version of events, from beyond the grave), is that it is supposed to be late at night, last man standing in the bar kind of sound.

Encuentras inspiración diaria en... tumblr. Vengo de una pequeña aldea rural de Nueva Zelanda y al residir actualmente en una ciudad contaminada, ruidosa y adicta al trabajo me suele poner un poco de los nervios, así que encuentro algo de tranquilidad en los blogs de tumblr donde la gente cuelga fotos hermosas y vuelvo a sentir de nuevo la hierba bajo mis pies y el viento en la cara.
Sitio favorito en el mundo: Caminar por las montañas y el campo, no importa el lugar, siempre que no haya nadie alrededor. Pasé el verano pasado recorriendo las montañas del Luberon en la Provenza francesa y fue bastante especial, y ya tengo localizado mi sitio para el próximo Agosto.
¿En qué te sueles fijar caminando por la calle?: Siempre me fijo en los escaparates aunque no voy nunca de compras. Si no hay escaparates me fijo en la gente. Y en el suelo, ya sabes, para no pisar nada.
Alguien que te haya marcado en la vida: Adopté nuevos padres hace unos años. Josephine falleció ya, pero era una enorme fan de la música. Uno de los grandes amores de su vida fue Elvis Presley, y en los primeros 70s se fue sola a América y siguió la gira, asistiendo a 10 conciertos en 5 días. Roy ha comprado recientemente un yate y da la vuelta al mundo. Actualmente se encuentra en algún lugar de Centroamérica, y viaja de vuelta a Nueva Zelanda por las Islas Marquesas, que se supone que es uno de los sitios más recónditos del Planeta. Me encantaría unirme a él en algún lugar del Pacífico Sur. Planea pasar la mayor parte del tiempo en islas de las que pocos han oído hablar, y eso a mí me va perfecto aunque el sol no le siente bien a mis tatuajes.

Un sitio en la red que visites a menudo o te gustaría recomendar... www.befunky.com es una buena herramienta de edición fotográfica gratuita cuando te hace falta retocar o editar rápidamente una foto. Solía sacar muchas fotos con cámaras Lomo o Holga y me molestaba tener todos esas herramientas de Lomo/Holga predeterminadas, pero actualmente ya no revelo fotos así que es una herramienta fácil, barata y rápida. ¡Y también uso mucho el traductor de Google!
Qué hay en tus bolsillos... Ahora mismo no tengo bolsillos, aunque de verdad te digo que me gustaría que toda la ropa los tuviera.
Alguna canción en la que te hubiera gustado participar: Si tuviera garganta suficiente me hubiera encantado ser una de las coristas de Elvis en Las Vegas.
Un sitio en el que te gustaría tocar... He ido cinco veces al Festival de Roskilde pero nunca he tocado ahí, así que algún día me gustaría hacerlo.
Un sitio para comer y un sitio para beber... Me encantaría comer en algún pub rural escocés, con una buena selección de whisky. Me encanta el whisky así que para beber elegiría cualquier pub de la parte vieja de Edimburgo, digamos por ejemplo el Blue Blazer en Bread Street. Es mi favorito.

You find daily inspiration in... tumblr. I come from a small town in rural New Zealand, and being stuck in a polluted, bustling, workaholic city tends to drive me a wee bit mad, so I follow the tumblr blogs of people who post beautiful tranquil photos and feel the grass under my feet and the wind in my hair again.
Favourite place in the world: Walking in the countryside and hills, anywhere really, as long as I don't see any other people. I spent some time last summer walking in the hills of Luberon in Provence which was pretty special, and I've got my spot booked again this August.
What do you usually look at walking in the street? I always look in the shop windows, even though I never shop. If there are none, I look at people. Failing that, I watch the pavement to make sure I don't step in anything smelly.
Anyone that has really left an impression in your life or you look up to for inspiration: I adopted some new parents a few years ago. Josephine has now passed away, but she was a huge music fan. One of the great loves of her life was Elvis Presley, and in the early 70s she went on her own to America and trailed him on tour, taking in 10 concerts in 5 days. Roy has now bought a yacht and is sailing around the globe. Currently he is somewhere around central America, and is heading back towards New Zealand via the Marquesas Islands, which are said to be one of the most hard to reach places on Earth. I would love to join him in the south pacific sometime. He plans to spend most him time tinkering about islands that no-one has ever heard of, and that sounds pretty good to me, although the sun would be no good for my tattoos.

A website you visit often or would like to recommend... www.befunky.com is a free photo editing website when you want a quick touch up or edit on a photo. I used to take a lot of photos on my Lomo or Holga cameras, so I find it a bit annoying to have Lomo/Holga presets, but these days I don't find myself developing any films so it is a good, fast, cheap substitute. And google translate gets a lot of hits on my computer too!
What's in your pockets right now... I don't have any pockets, although I feel that every item of clothing should come with them.
Any song you'd love to have partcipated in: If I had the lungs I wouldn't mind having been one of Elivs' backing singers in Vegas.
I'd really would love to play again in... Can I change your question around a bit? I've been to Roskilde Festival five times and I've never played there, but one day I would really love to.
A place for a meal/ and one for a drink... I wouldn't mind sitting down to a meal in a good Scottish pub in the countryside, somewhere with a cracking selection of whisky. I am rather fond of Scotch so for a drink I would chose any pub in the old town of Edinburgh, let's say the Blue Blazer on Bread Street. It's my favourite.

Un sitio en la red que visites a menudo o te gustaría recomendar... www.befunky.com es una buena herramienta de edición fotográfica gratuita cuando te hace falta retocar o editar rápidamente una foto. Solía sacar muchas fotos con cámaras Lomo o Holga y me molestaba tener todos esas herramientas de Lomo/Holga predeterminadas, pero actualmente ya no revelo fotos así que es una herramienta fácil, barata y rápida. ¡Y también uso mucho el traductor de Google!

Un sitio para comer y un sitio para beber... Me encantaría comer en algún pub rural escocés, con una buena selección de whisky. Me encanta el whisky así que para beber elegiría cualquier pub de la parte vieja de Edimburgo, digamos por ejemplo el Blue Blazer en Bread Street. Es mi favorito.

You find daily inspiration in... tumblr. I come from a small town in rural New Zealand, and being stuck in a polluted, bustling, workaholic city tends to drive me a wee bit mad, so I follow the tumblr blogs of people who post beautiful tranquil photos and feel the grass under my feet and the wind in my hair again.
Favourite place in the world: Walking in the countryside and hills, anywhere really, as long as I don't see any other people. I spent some time last summer walking in the hills of Luberon in Provence which was pretty special, and I've got my spot booked again this August.
What do you usually look at walking in the street? I always look in the shop windows, even though I never shop. If there are none, I look at people. Failing that, I watch the pavement to make sure I don't step in anything smelly.
Anyone that has really left an impression in your life or you look up to for inspiration: I adopted some new parents a few years ago. Josephine has now passed away, but she was a huge music fan. One of the great loves of her life was Elvis Presley, and in the early 70s she went on her own to America and trailed him on tour, taking in 10 concerts in 5 days. Roy has now bought a yacht and is sailing around the globe. Currently he is somewhere around central America, and is heading back towards New Zealand via the Marquesas Islands, which are said to be one of the most hard to reach places on Earth. I would love to join him in the south pacific sometime. He plans to spend most him time tinkering about islands that no-one has ever heard of, and that sounds pretty good to me, although the sun would be no good for my tattoos.

Favourite books: Look at me (Anita Brookner), Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys), The crying of lot 49 (Thomas Pynchon).
Favourite all-time music albums: There are so many it's hard to pin them down to a list, depends on my mood and the day.
Inspirational photographers: Many, perhaps the first photographer I found inspirational was Man Ray.
A good movie to watch in a rainy day...Once upon a time in the west (Sergio Leone), or the Big Lebowski.
A website you visit often or would like to recommend... www.befunky.com is a free photo editing website when you want a quick touch up or edit on a photo. I used to take a lot of photos on my Lomo or Holga cameras, so I find it a bit annoying to have Lomo/Holga presets, but these days I don't find myself developing any films so it is a good, fast, cheap substitute. And google translate gets a lot of hits on my computer too!
What's in your pockets right now... I don't have any pockets, although I feel that every item of clothing should come with them.

I'd really would love to play again in... Can I change your question around a bit? I've been to Roskilde Festival five times and I've never played there, but one day I would really love to.
A place for a meal/ and one for a drink... I wouldn't mind sitting down to a meal in a good Scottish pub in the countryside, somewhere with a cracking selection of whisky. I am rather fond of Scotch so for a drink I would chose any pub in the old town of Edinburgh, let's say the Blue Blazer on Bread Street. It's my favourite.
