All Tomorrow's Parties

En el vídeo el director de cine Jim Jarmusch con los músicos Bradford Cox (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound) y Randy Randall (No Age) interpretando la canción de Neil Young 'Cortez The Killer' (de

uno de los mejores discos de éste, 'Zuma', publicado en 1971). El clip se grabó en una habitación de hotel con cámaras de seguridad, esa es la extraña temática del programa 'Surveillance' de Pitchfork.com. Me encontré con el vídeo por casualidad leyendo sobre el Festival de música que se celebró hace unos días, All Tomorrow's Parties, que además de ser una canción de la Velvet Underground es una organización londinense que publica música y organiza conciertos y que es conocida sobre todo por su peculiar evento itinerante de música (el año pasado ví en el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla un interesante -y loco- documental sobre All Tomorrow's Parties que produjo la gente de Warp) que tiene por norma invitar a un artista para seleccionar el cartel. Hasta la fecha la selección ha corrido a cargo en las distintas fechas de Pavement, The Flaming Lips, The Breeders, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Mike Patton & Melvins, My Bloody Valentine, Explosions In The Sky, Pitchfork Media, Portishead,

Dirty Three, Sonic Youth, The Shins, Sleater Kinney, Dinosaur Jr., Devendra Banhart, Mudhoney, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Mars Volta, Vincent Gallo, Slint, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Stephen Malkmus, Mogwai, Tortoise, Shellac, Autechre, Modest Mouse y el creador de los Simpsons Matt Groening. Jim Jarmusch eligió a las bandas para el pasado 5 de Septiembre, último día del Festival de este año donde además actuaron en los días previos Iggy & The Stooges o Sonic Youth entre otros. White Hills, Gza, Kurt Vile, Dj Kool Herc, T Model Ford, Thurnston Moore de Sonic Youth, Raekwon, Girls, Fucked Up, Wooden Shjips, The Black Angels, Vivian Girls... y una proyección de las fotografías de Ricky Powell (autor de las imágenes que acompañan este texto), también conocido como The Rickster y de quien se conoce sobre todo que fotografió con su Minolta el emergente mundo del hip-hop cuando comenzaba a generarse esa escena. Además Jarmusch seleccionó de los archivos de The Criterion Collection una serie de películas de temática criminal para ser exhibidas durante el evento (la programación contenía 'Underworld', Josef Stenberg, 1927; 'Atraco Perfecto' -'The Killing'-, Stanley Kubrick, 1956; 'Le Doulos', Jean Pierre Melville, 1962, 'Gomorra', Matteo Garrone, 2008; 'Brute Force', Jules Dassin, 1947, 'A Colt Is My Passport', Takashi Nomura, 1967; 'Touchez Pas Au Grisbi', Jacques Becker, 1954; 'Kiss Me Deadly', Robert Aldrich, 1955). La

fabulosa editora The Criterion Collection preparó además para la ocasión una serie de posters de las películas que se proyectaban, encargados a dibujantes de comics.

I got to this video by chance reading about an event that took place some days ago in New York, All Tomorrow's Parties, what besides being the title for a song by The Velvet

Underground & Nico is a London-based organization, better known for setting up a peculiar traveling music Festival (last year I saw at the Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla an interesting -and mad- documentary about that music Festival, a film that was produced by the people of Warp) that has the policy of inviting an artist to select the line up. So far the selection has been done in the different years by Pavement, The Flaming Lips, The Breeders, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Mike Patton & Melvins, My Bloody Valentine, Explosions In The Sky, Pitchfork Media, Portishead, Dirty Three, Sonic Youth, The Shins, Sleater Kinney, Dinosaur Jr., Devendra Banhart, Mudhoney, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Mars Volta, Vincent Gallo, Slint, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Stephen Malkmus, Mogwai, Tortoise, Shellac, Autechre, Modest Mouse

and the creator of The Simpsons show Matt Groening. Jim Jarmusch chose the bands for the past September 5th, last day of this year's show, where also were on stage in previous days Iggy & The Stooges and Sonic Youth among others. Herc, T Model Ford, Thurnston Moore of Sonic Youth, Raekwon, Girls, Fucked Up, Wooden Shjips, The Black Angels, Vivian Girls ... and a projection of photographs by Ricky Powell (some of them you are seeing with this text), also known as The Rickster who is known to have photographed with his Minolta the emerging classic scene of old school hip-hop. Jarmusch also selected a series of crime films from the archives of The Criterion Collection to be exhibited at the event (the program contained 'Underworld', Josef Stenberg, 1927; 'The Killing', Stanley Kubrick, 1956; 'Le Doulos', Jean Pierre Melville, 1962; 'Gomorrah', Matteo Garrone, 2008; 'Brute Force', Jules Dassin, 1947; 'A Colt Is My Passport ", Takashi Nomura, 1967; 'Touchez Pas Au Grisbi', Jacques Becker, 1954; 'Kiss Me Deadly', Robert Aldrich, 1955). The fabulous publishing company of The Criterion Collection also presented for the occasion a collection of posters, commissioned to comic illustrators.
